A Wonderful and Meaningful Review of Donny and Mary Grace Go to Camp

Cathy Pepe didn’t write the Grandma Gang mysteries for praise, accolades or glowing reviews. She penned the series to honor her beloved brother, Donny, whose zest for life was never slowed or dampened by his Down syndrome. The praise, accolades and glowing reviews that followed each book in the series were simply affirmation that she had aptly chosen the most fitting way to express her love for her inspiring brother.

When Cathy sadly passed away on May 26, shortly after completing Donny and Mary Grace Go to Camp, the popular series came to an end. Fittingly, it did so to wonderful critical reviews!

One of the best just came from Kirkus Reviews, one of America’s most respected literary review journals, which praised the book as “a sweet, low-key tale of adventure that ‘s enhanced by its lovable main characters.”

Kirkus, which has been publishing its semimonthly magazine for more than 90 years, went on to laud Cathy’s portrayal of Donny, writing: “Those who have family members or friends with Down syndrome will particularly appreciate Pepe’s sensitive and nuanced portrayal of Donny in this enjoyable, bighearted story.”

Donny and Mary Grace Go to Camp was the fourth and final installment in the Grandma Gang Mysteries series, following Mary Grace and Donny’s California Adventures (2021), Donny, Mary Grace and the Dognappers (2022) and Donny, Mary Grace and the Ugly Marbles (2023).
